Medical Teams FAQs

What does it cost to go on a trip?

Trip expenses are approximately $1500 per person, taking into account airfare, most lodging, most food, travel insurance, travel in-country, and medical supplies. MMA asks that you pay $650 of this amount, but strongly encourages you to raise or donate more. We provide fundraising support for team members in the form of materials and sample fundraising letters you can use to elicit money from friends, families, and organizations.

Do I have to speak Spanish?

It certainly helps make for a richer experience, but medical personnel are teamed with translators during clinics, as very few of the Hondurans we meet speak English. Keep in mind that if you don’t speak Spanish and are not a mid-level or higher medical provider or RN, this may not be the trip for you.

How do I apply or get on a trip?

Just fill out our Volunteer Application found here: Volunteer Application (Coming soon..). Our trip coordinator will contact you as we recruit members for upcoming trips. Note that trips are often filled up to a year in advance and you may have to be patient as you wait to be contacted. But if you are interested, be persistent! We want you and need your help.

Where do you go in Honduras?

Learn more about our service area here: Service Area.

Why Honduras?

After Hurricane Mitch devastated areas of Honduras and Nicaragua in 1998, a group of Missoula health care providers rallied to the relief efforts there. Realizing the need was long term, and having begun to make local connections, MMA decided to focus our work in Honduras. Read more of our history here: History of MMA.

How can I donate to MMA?

We have an online donation form here: Online Donations. Or if you prefer, you could mail us a check at PO Box 903, Missoula MT 59806. If you are near Missoula, you can contact us by email and find out what’s happening locally and how you might help. Email: info@missoulamedicalaid.net

Once I’m selected for a trip, what should I bring?

Your checked baggage will consist entirely of medical supplies, meaning the only clothes and personal you will bring are what you can carry on the airplane. MMA has some cots and mosquito netting to provide. For suggestions, see our volunteer information document here: Info for new volunteers.
