Healthy Homes and Farms

Missoula Medical Aid raises money to support Save the Children agricultural and home projects that make the homes and farms healthier and more productive. The idea is that people living in a healthier and more productive place will get sick less often.
To that end, our money is been used to:

  • Start small chicken farms with direct marketing of meat and eggs;
  • Distribute milk cows into a community in order to give children access to milk;
  • Introduce plant barriers to contain soil erosion;
  • Teach and model organic farming techniques;
  • Buy starter trays and seeds so farmers can begin to plant a wider variety of vegetables;
  • Provide technical help (and red worms) to compost coffee pulp and keep it out of the local streams;
  • Build pig pens and teach farmers how to efficiently capture and use manure for fertilizer;
  • Fund community corn mills and the construction of hundreds of kitchen wood stoves with chimneys that use less wood and keep homes smoke free.
